Understanding the Medical Forensic Exam
A medical forensic exam is a healthcare visit focused on your physical well-being and the careful documentation of what happened. Our specially trained forensic nurses provide a safe space where your comfort, safety, and choices always come first. Whether you choose to report to law enforcement or not, you deserve expert medical care and support.
What Happens During Your Visit
The nurse will speak with you about your medical history and the details of the incident. With your permission, they may perform a physical evaluation, treat injuries, offer preventative medications, and, if applicable, collect forensic evidence for your future use.
Privacy and Your Consent
You are in control of the entire process. You can skip any part of the exam or stop at any time. Your information is handled with the highest level of confidentiality, and we serve you with dignity and respect for your autonomy.

Non-Fatal Strangulation: What You Need to Know
Non-fatal strangulation occurs when pressure is applied to the neck, obstructing the flow of air or blood to the brain. It is an extremely dangerous form of assault that can cause serious internal injury or long-term health complications, even when there are no visible bruises or marks left behind. Your safety and health are our priority, and understanding these risks is a critical step in care.
Warning Signs and Symptoms to Watch For :
- Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
- Difficulty swallowing or feeling like your throat is tight
- Hoarse, weak, or changed voice
- Neck pain, tenderness, or swelling
- Headache, dizziness, or feeling faint
- Confusion, trouble concentrating, or memory gaps
- Blurred vision, seeing spots, or loss of consciousness
- Feeling very sleepy, “out of it,” or not like yourself
Important: These symptoms can be signs of serious injury, even if you don’t see bruises or marks on your neck. If any of these happen after someone put pressure on your neck, seek medical care as soon as possible.
