Laura was born and raised in the former Panama Canal Zone, and moved to the United States (Texas) at the age of 22. After living in the US for years, she completed her BSN at Texas Christian University via a ROTC scholarship. She spent nearly 19 years on active duty as an Army Nurse, specializing in Critical Care. Laura earned her CCRN certification in 2007. She had duty assignments at FT Stewart, Georgia; Walter Reed Army Medical Center; FT Hood, Texas; and the US Army Burn Center in San Antonio. In addition, she was deployed twice to Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. She has 24 years of nursing experience providing trauma-informed care for patients across the lifespan, with four years of forensic nursing experience.

It was during her time in the Army that Laura realized how many women had been sexually assaulted but did not report or were unable to report due to unavailable services.

When she isn’t working, Laura can be found spending time with family and friends, riding and competing her horses in dressage, and spending time on her little ranchette.

Many things in life prepared Kathryn for this kind of nursing . At 17 due to a family tragedy, she was forced to leave nursing and go in another direction yet never stopped thinking about nursing.

She didn't realize the benefit teaching child development to high school students would be to what was next. She completed her BSN in 2009 with the support of her husband and kids. She worked as a Nurse Family Partnership nurse for 6 years, in antepartum for a short time, and in public health providing care for women seeking asylum and in 2019, she earned her Master's in nursing education.

While teaching at Texas A&M Central TX, she heard about SANE work. She learned how great the need for forensic nursing was, pursued her training through Texas A&M, and began working at the Williamson County Child Advocacy Center during COVID. Not long after that, she resigned from teaching to give her full attention to SANE work.

It has been a challenge and a calling to provide not only evidence collection for children and adolescents but a warmth of presence without judgement to each person she encounters. She counts it as a privilege to work hand in hand with our MDT partners to provide excellence in service, care, and cooperation for the benefit of the survivor.

She now has the privilege of testifying as an expert witness on their behalf and helping the Academy of Forensic Nursing develop CEU's for other forensic nurses on Trauma Informed Care .
